Although this is true for all forms of web design, it is especially true for logo design.

This is something we've encountered numerous times. Think about the many different conventions of logo design. They're usually placed in the top left-hand corner of the page, they are usually linked to the homepage, they're usually used to reinforce ideas or messages about the brand itself… I could go on.

So how do we craft innovative logos in a world where there are so many standards and expectations? We take advantage of them.

Brand reinforcement is a must

Okay, so first and foremost, your logo is your brand's identity. It is a badge of pride, and a way to reinforce the principles and ideas that make up your organization. In that sense, it ought to be a straightforward platform for innovation. Yet, there are some expectations that a user has about what a logo should look like.

Here are a couple of examples:

Your logo ought to reiterate the same ideas that the rest of your content and branding supports. Organization names have a lot to do with logo design as well. In the above examples, the designs reflect the subject matter in the name of the organizations.

This type of cognitive association also helps to reinforce brand identity.

As one of its primary purposes, the way in which you choose to reinforce your brand has a huge bearing on the success of a logo. Here's your chance to introduce creativity and playfulness into your organization in a way that captures the attention of a potential visitor.

Do you have a fun work culture? Show us with your logo, but don't take it so far that it is not immediately recognizable as a logo.

Alternative linking schemes

When designing the flow of a site, designers must account for the need to return to the homepage. Rather than providing a “home” button in the navigation bar, the logo has been the traditional method for providing users with a way to return home.

This is a standard. But that doesn't mean it's the best possible way to go about things. You could theoretically link your logo to any page you deem appropriate. And since we're talking about logo innovation, there are numerous ways to get sneaky (in a good way) with your logo linking scheme.

Consider the advantages of directing users to your contact page when they click on the logo

Perhaps there is a page on your site with a particularly high conversion rate, and you'd like to increase traffic to that particular page. You could try linking your logo to that page instead of the homepage, and measuring the results. There's a high probability this will confuse your users, but it doesn't necessarily mean that there will be a detrimental impact on conversion performance, especially if you still provide a way of returning home.

Consider the advantages of directing users to your contact page when they click on the logo: you know that the user is interested in staying on the site, because they're clicking the logo, but you also know that they don't necessarily know what they want if they're returning to the homepage.

Placement is important

Another standard in logo design has to do with placement. How many logos have you seen that have not been in the top left corner of the page? I bet you can count all of them on one or both hands. That's because users expect it to be in the top left-hand corner.

Expectation plays a huge role in usability.

And while I may have advocated for the abuse of user expectations in the previous section, here it is an entirely different story: until someone proves me wrong, there's no reason to believe that conversion and bounce rates would be negatively affected by an altered linking scheme; placement, on the other hand, could be a deal breaker.

Expectation plays a huge role in usability.…placing the logo in any location other than the top left-hand corner will hurt your site

Case studies have shown that placing the logo in any location other than the top left-hand corner will hurt your site. NN Group found that centering your logos will make it roughly six times harder to return to the homepage of a site than left-aligned logos.

That means that regardless of where your logo will take users, they just won't click on it if it's not in an easily recognizable location.

Your logo is not arbitrary, but there's room for innovation

Properly thought-out logo innovation can elevate an organization to a level beyond their competitors in the eyes of their target audience.

And while innovation is almost always a good thing, there are ways that it can hurt you. User expectations don't have to be met 100% of the time, but it is important to take into consideration the exact ways in which your innovations will affect your user base.

Don't make choices that will restrict users, or make it more difficult to convert. Remember that there are conventions and expectations in web design, and often, they can make or break a website's performance.

Do find ways to innovate that will excite users or direct them to corners of your website they may have never known existed without your intervention. If this means surprising them, don't hesitate to do so.

Anytime you innovate, be sure to track the performance of your changes on a level that will give you granular detail. Which users were negatively affected by your change? What were their expectations? You get the point.

You don't have much choice but to position things in SVG. SVG is a declarative graphics format, and what are graphics but positioned drawing instructions? There are plenty of gotchas and potentially frustrating situations though, so let's get down to it.

This is the bar chart we're wanting to build:

We could make this in our graphics editor of choice and dump it into our markup as an

tag (even as an `.svg`), but where would the fun in that be? I also wanted to make this SVG chart by hand because I knew I would learn more about the syntax than if I were to just export a Sketch or Illustrator file.

To get things moving, let's make an

that will house our child elements:

Now let's make the two bars. The first will sit in the background and the second will sit on top of it and it'll represent the data of our graph:

<g class='bars'>
<rect fill='#3d5599' width='100%' height='25'></rect>;
<rect fill='#cb4d3e' width='45%' height='25'></rect>
</g>

(Without providing a
x
and
y
attribute for the
<rect>
s, they are assumed to be 0.)

In the demo below, I've made them animate so you can see the second rect is placed on top of the first (this would be like drawing two rectangles in Sketch, one is layered on top of the other):

See the Pen Chart stuff: 1 by Robin Rendle (@robinrendle) on CodePen.

Next we can add the lines that act as markers to more easily read the data at 0, 25, 50, 75, and 100%. All we need to do is make a new group and add a rect for each marker, right? Sure, but you'll see we run into a little problem in a second.

Inside the SVG, and beneath the
<g>
where we styled our chart's data we can write the following:

<g class='markers'>
<rect fill='red' x='50%' y='0' width='2' height='35'></rect>
</g>

That ought to look like this:

See the Pen Chart stuff: 2 by Robin Rendle (@robinrendle) on CodePen.

Neat! Let's add all the other markers and fix the colors whilst we're at it:

<g class='markers'>
<rect fill='#001f3f' x='0%' y='0' width='2' height='35'></rect>
<rect fill='#001f3f' x='25%' y='0' width='2' height='35'></rect>
<rect fill='#001f3f' x='50%' y='0' width='2' height='35'></rect>
<rect fill='#001f3f' x='75%' y='0' width='2' height='35'></rect>
<rect fill='#001f3f' x='100%' y='0' width='2' height='35'></rect>
</g>

We've added a
rect
for each marker, added a fill to set the color and positioned them with the
x
attribute. Let's see what that renders in the browser:

See the Pen Chart stuff: 3 by Robin Rendle (@robinrendle) on CodePen.

Where the heck did that last one go? Well, we did tell it to be positioned at 100%, so it's actually positioned off the screen to the right. We need to take its width into consideration and move it to the left by 2. There are a number of ways we can fix this.

1) We could apply an inline transform to nudge it back over

<rect fill='#001f3f' x='100%' y='0' width='2' height='35' transform="translate(-2, 0)"></rect>

2) We could apply that same transform through CSS:

rect:last-of-type {
transform: translateX(-2px); /* Remember this isn't really "pixels", it's a length of 2 in the SVG coordinate system */
}

3) Or we could not use a percentage and place it along the X axis at a precise place. We know what the exact coordinate system of SVG is thanks to the
viewBox
attribute. In Chapter 6 of Practical SVG, Chris explains:

The
viewBox
is an attribute of
svg
that determines the coordinate system and aspect ratio. The four values are x, y, width and height.

Say our
viewBox
is...

So it is 1000 units wide. Our marker is 2 units wide. So to place the final marker along the right edge, we'd place it at 998! (1000 - 2). That becomes our x attribute:

...
<rect fill='#001f3f' x='998' y='0' width='2' height='35'></rect>
...

Which will lead to our marker being positioned on the far right edge of the SVG, even if we resize it:

See the Pen Chart stuff: 4 by Robin Rendle (@robinrendle) on CodePen.

Yay! We don't have to add a % or a pixel value here because it's using the coordinate system set up by the
viewBox
.

With all that finally sorted we can move onto the next issue: adding the % label text beneath each marker to denote 25, 50%, etc. To do that we'll make a new
<g>
inside the

and add our
<text>
elements:

<g>
<text fill='#0074d9' x='0' y='60'>0%</text>
<text fill='#0074d9' x='25%' y='60'>25%</text>
<text fill='#0074d9' x='50%' y='60'>50%</text>
<text fill='#0074d9' x='75%' y='60'>75%</text>
<text fill='#0074d9' x='100%' y='60'>100%</text>
</g>

Because we're doing this by hand I want to use % for the x value, but unfortunately that will end up looking like this:

See the Pen Chart stuff: 5 by Robin Rendle (@robinrendle) on CodePen.

Again, we have a problem with the final element not aligning as we might expect it to. The middle labels are misplaced as well; ideally they would be centered underneath their marks. I thought I might have to nudge each element into place with the correct x value before Chris pointed me to the
text-anchor
attribute which I had never heard about.

With this attribute we can manipulate the text sort of like the
text-align
property in CSS. This property is naturally inherited, so we can set it once on the
g
and then target the first and last elements:

<g text-anchor='middle'>
<text text-anchor='start' fill='#0074d9' x='0' y='60'>0%</text>
<text fill='#0074d9' x='25%' y='60'>25%</text>
<text fill='#0074d9' x='50%' y='60'>50%</text>
<text fill='#0074d9' x='75%' y='60'>75%</text>
<text text-anchor='end' fill='#0074d9' x='100%' y='60'>100%</text>
</g>

That will look like:

See the Pen Chart stuff: 6 by Robin Rendle (@robinrendle) on CodePen.

That's it! With a little bit of knowledge about how
viewBox
works, along with
x
,
y
coordinates and attributes like
text-anchor
we can do pretty much anything with the elements inside an SVG.

By making these charts by hand, it feels like we have a lot of control. It's not hard to imagine how we might exert even more design control or pipe in data with JavaScript.

With a tiny extra bit of work, we can animate these charts to really make them stand out. Try hovering over this version of our chart for instance:

See the Pen Chart stuff: 7 by Robin Rendle (@robinrendle) on CodePen.

Pretty neat, huh? And that's all possible with just SVG and CSS. If you're interested in learning more then I wrote about how to make charts with SVG a while back which explains this stuff in more depth.

Now let's go make some cool charts!

With the tools getting more user-friendly and affordable, virtual reality (VR) development is easier to get involved in than ever before. Our team at Clearbridge Mobile recently jumped on the opportunity to develop immersive VR content for the Samsung Gear VR, using Samsung's 360 camera.

The result is ClearVR, a mobile application demo that enables users to explore the features, pricing, interiors and exteriors of listed vehicles. Developing this demo project gave us a better understanding of VR development for our future projects, including scaling, stereoscopic display and motion-tracking practices. This article is an introductory guide to developing for VR, with the lessons we learned along the way.

The post Developing For Virtual Reality: What We Learned appeared first on Smashing Magazine.
Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01771662215860756449noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4524952377653092144.post-38074103295915383402016-09-19T03:08:00.001-07:002016-09-19T03:08:02.243-07:00Nobody & Co designs collection of "fantasy" furniture
